New 'urban' suburbs are better than old ones, except for these things
I live in a city that always seems to be building new suburbs, and I've noticed a change in the ways those communities are marketed. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, suburbs were often cast as places of refuge from the mean streets of the city, oases of green far from crowded and noisy downtowns. But today, the marketing of suburbs uses phrases that were once associated with cities, such as walkability, bikeabilty and urban vitality. So what gives? Are suburbs changing, or is the marketing of suburbs changing?

Several weeks ago, I asked members of the Shifter community for tips on keeping a bike running smoothly. And you delivered! Hundreds of very thoughtful tips rolled in. But in reading them, I realized many of you know a lot more about bike maintenance than I do, so I decided to ask an expert for help in assessing them. 130-year-old bicycle vs brand-new modern bike
Просмотров 66 тыс.Месяц назад
I've often wondered why, after a century of innovation, modern bicycles look so similar to the ones that people rode in the 1890s. After all the innovations in the world since that time, why haven't we improved on the bicycle? That question drove me to compare a brand-new, just-out-of-the-box bike to one that was built in 1895. And maybe you'll be as surprised as me at the similarities and the ...

Most cities still lack robust networks of safe, separated bike lanes, which means motorists and cyclists must share space on our roads. There’s maybe a related topic here about the social (societal?) effects of moving to smaller housing (and Dutch, or Vancouver, viewers would be best placed to speak here). I suspect Canadians, like Australians (I’m in Perth), have a culture in part built around those wide open suburbs - Kids grew up with own bedrooms, young kids played unsupervised in back yards, street hockey…. Put young families now into 1-2 bed apartments and “town houses” (inner city or new “urban villages… similar deal?) - kids need taking to the park, noisy neighbours through the wall, no private space for teenagers (homework? Friends over?) . Is it the end of street hockey…?… can Canada survive😀🇨🇦

Similar in Australia - new suburbia marketed with all those key words, but ….well, not really in practice. Land prices have ramped up since the wide-open suburbia era (though nowhere near Canadian levels… though seems calgary isn’t too bad, but Vancouver…!!!) so economically everything has to be built smaller. The marketing is mostly to mask that? The “urban village” isn’t that real. Yes, Houses are smaller, closer together, BBQ pits, “parkland” / undersized “sports” fields…. But still mostly car dependent, and with carpark wrapped shopping areas

My girlfriend had one of those. Shittiest bike ever, heavy as a bag of bricks, everything was different than on a normal bike that why very hard to work on, heavy-duty, yes but not well produced, a Nightmare to ride, very old and outdated in general. Dont buy those bikes, buy something light and modern.

When I cycle/bus I need to adapt and go with the flow. If it rains - i go to a bar or wait under a tree. If the bus is a 20 mins wait - I go shopping or for a walk. I think this is good for mental health. If I’m stuck in car-jam - I just endure it and feel optionless and frustrated.

Its just too dangerous to ride a bike in my area. Seems like most vehicle drivers are speeding and looking at their phones. I only ride on bike paths now at parks. Too many bike riders have been killed or hit by motorist in my area. Not worth the risk.

I have to say, regardless of the biking for transport, the older suberbs you shot, look extremely appealing for the living, especially with all that greenery, trees, space, quiet, etc. That place is no ghetto, nor is it likely to change into. Wally and Theodore, June, and Ward, would feel right at home there.

I think it's good to wear a helmet, because it could make a big difference in the unlikely event that you are in a crash and hit your head, but it's also not ridiculous to ride helmetless when wearing a helmet isn't practical. I wouldn't want to wear the public helmets on a bike share bike, even if they are available. I've given friends a ride on the back of my longtail cargo bike, without a helmet. It's probably safer than some other aspects of walking/taxi/bus home late at night. I don't really buy into the idea of helmets, or the push for helmets making things less safe. If you deleted that line from the text about helmets, it's not like they would replace it with something else. I agree that it's silly that bike helmets get more focus than safe infrastructure, but I don't think that's a causal relationship, either. It's just an easier thing to get real numbers for, even if they don't tell the whole story.

In much of Japan autos, trucks, pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists share the same space--- narrow streets without sidewalks. Everybody has to watch out for everybody else. Lack of zoning laws means that all sorts of shops and services that people need are mixed in among or near the houses.

I watched this entire video and really tried to understand your points of view but my answer didn't change: yes, yes you absolutely are. If you went through this video and replaced the word "helmet" with "seatbelt" people would rightfully call you insane. If helmets are cool enough for Gordon Ramsay and Radiohead, they're cool enough for you. Don't discourage behavior that directly saves lives.

Ironically despite being into urbanism, I am a huge fan if garages. Not for putting your car in, but for working on projects and storing little used items or gear. The beauty of a bakfiets is that if i lived somewhere with good bike infrastructure, I could have a one car garage instead of a two car, and still have plenty of room to put stuff and the bike in the garage

After binge watching many of your videos and getting excited about biking to work every day (3 miles) I bought a nice comfortable bike as I am getting to an older stage of life. One problem I encountered I didn't expect. When mounting the bike, I couldn't life my leg over the bike. IT was a little balance, but mostly no flexibility and strength in lifting my leg over. Here is my question: Do you have any exercises to help an old geezer like me to get that side leg strength and flexibility, or different ways of getting on the bike. Right now I am laying the bike on its side and just stepping into it.

I wish the US was more like the Netherlands or Denmark were this video would be disregarded as overtly common sense, but thanks for spreading the truth. #2 - Droppers are a great way to share a bike for super quick seat height adjustment. #4 - Small diameter rotors with a center pull, top loading pad caliper (like TRP spyke or spire) are so much easier to maintain that they make rim brakes seem like going back to the dark ages. #6 - I was perfectly happy on a steel 3 speed riding around Amsterdam. People who ride in Atlanta, Portland, and San Francisco have a _slightly_ different opinion. But I'm all in on the 1X. Kick stands do ruin the simple sleekness of a nice frame, and fenders are dorky looking, but when you ride everyday they make life so much easier you don't care. But they will they inspire you to own another bike without them...

Hmm a bit late to the show here. here are 2 eurocents and 4 bulgarian stotinki- coins on this topic. Before that thank you, that was very interesting to see the stats. For Sofia, Bulgaria (i would assume also other cities in the country) situation is the following - the bikes sold in Bulgaria are mostly MTBs and the cheap once. When I was growing up the iconic bike was the so called Balkanche (Балканче - google it I believe you might find it interesting). Then when communism ended in the 90s, for children (like myself) the basically one option was a BMX or a MTB. I guess this did no change for quite a while so people just get MTBs. Second reason why this is the case imo is the infrastructure in the cities. Sofia is the largest one that has development in the cycling infrastructure but it is still not well thought enough and combining that with the state of the roads and bike lanes, an MTB is the go to bike if you want to ride somewhat comfortable and being able "jump" over obstacles - sidewalks, cracks, mud ...people. One more factor is that most people will have only one bike which will be used for everything so storage of the bikes is a factor as well. Second thing I am surprised that Austria did not pop up on any stats honestly. Vienna at least has, a very spread bike culture and infrastructure. Bike lanes and paths are being continuously added and more and more people I see out commuting. Also because of the Danube (and the danube island) there are many professional and semiprofessional cyclists as clubs - there is bike path basically from Passau in Germany through Linz, Vienna until Bratislava in Slovakia (which I hope to do soon, at least to Vienna). As for stats in Vienna - commuters will use normal everyday clothes, the semi&profi's will be full spandex, helmet and goggles (also the obligatory 10000+euro bike). Helmets are mandatory for children up to 12 and most people just carry one. Gender separation I would say its about 55m:45f +-5% from what i have seen so fairly equal. Also notable here is the increased usage in e-bikes, it basically exploded in the last 5years. One thing that I see as well are cargo bikes mostly with families with small children, but there are quite a few businesses that use them as well (the Austrian post for example and DHL although not dominantly). Thank you for reading.
